“Let nature move in – let it all grow”

The secret of successful gardening and farming? Working with nature, not against it. That’s what Alexander Thompson-Byer discovered, and it’s a message he wants to share

06 June 2024

”Most of my clients wanted pretty, pristine gardens,” says Alexander Thompson-Byer of his time as a gardener near London. But he took a different path after discovering the benefits of ”working with nature, not against it”.

Swapping Surrey for the Outer Hebrides, Alexander now has a croft (a traditional small-scale Scottish farm) where he lives with his partner and young son, Cedar.

His hope is to create somewhere “vibrant with life, where everything works together to create a beautiful and fun space.”

Our short film, created as part of the Save Our Wild Isles campaign, follows Alexander as he learns more about the idea of permaculture, and how to get growing and get connected with nature wherever you live.
